Katie's Story

Yeah well this is the way they see it but let me tell my side of the story.
Sunday I like to get my family out together for a walk. All week Dad takes me out and then Mom takes me on Saturdays, but Sunday often I succeed in getting them out together. They seem to like Alki. It's O.K. we see lots of other dogs there and I like to sniff some different scents wherever we go. Anyway the three of us went to Alki. It was hot and sunny. They walked about a mile and then they sat down so I was obliged to sit down with them.

Recently Mom bought me a new red leash. The old one got thrown away by mistake. I hate this new leash. It extends out 16 feet so Mom or Dad can keep walking while I stop a minute to sniff something interesting. Because its new I guess it keeps a constant pressure on my collar and makes a horrible zipping noise when the inertia goes back into the handle. When I am right beside them the collar kind of comes up round my ears and I feel like the device is trying to hang me. Anyway Dad knew the leash was bothering me when I tried to settle down under the bench seat so he leaned down and released it from my collar.

Well after a while I got really bored. I don't know how they could be so interested in watching stupid boats for half and hour. This was not my idea of a walk. Anyway I thought I'd just wander out of the enclosed area and sniff by the adjacent bushes for a few minutes. Pretty soon I got interested in some different scents and was quite happy sniffing around, but after a while I freaked because I could not find where I came from. I ran one way and then the other. Frankly I am not sure where I ran but I was scared and I could not find my family and the car was a long way down the road.

My lousy parents didn't even know I was lost and then they left without me. I was terrified alone down there with all the noise and commotion at a city beach area. I had to sleep outside on Sunday night in this awful place all night. Did I say sleep? I did not do much sleeping.

The next day a man tried to catch me but I escaped him. You can't trust strangers especially men. Where the heck were my parents? Later I was checking cars near the street. Where is our little black car? How come there are so many of these little cars that look like ours? I ran in the road and almost got hit by a big truck, which really scared the crap out of me. Then this nice woman picked me up and took me away from this terrible place to her house. She had a lovely soothing voice and she fed me. I had not eaten for a long time so was glad to eat quite a lot of her food. She also bathed me. I needed a clean up. I am not keen on water but I liked the attention.

This woman and her family were so kind to me. And that night (Monday) I slept at their house next to the bed just like I do at home. I was starting to think life would not be so bad with this new family.

Tuesday there were some phone calls back and forth and the next thing I knew they were loading me up in the truck with them and we drove a couple of blocks to a store. Who should be there but my parents. Wow they had found me after all. I do not know how they found me. I liked Kathy who had rescued me and treated me so well but I was glad to return to my familiar surroundings and go back my regular routine. I never ever want to go through a nightmare like this again. I am so thankful to be back home again.
